Chapters of You (“we”, “us”, “our”) is the data controller responsible for your personal information. We operate the website chaptersofyou.co.uk and provide a guided memory-book service that helps families preserve their stories.

2. Data we collect

When you make a purchase

  • Name and email address of the gift buyer
  • Name and email address of the gift recipient (if you provide one)
  • Your personalised welcome message
  • Billing address and payment details (processed directly by Stripe; we never see or store your card number)
  • Order details including product, delivery date, and amount paid

When we deliver the service

  • Email replies from the recipient containing their story answers
  • Any voice-to-text content submitted via email
  • Delivery preference and scheduling information

When you browse the website

  • IP address and browser/device information (via Google Analytics, only with your consent)
  • Pages visited, time on site, referral source (analytics only)
  • Ad interaction data (only with marketing consent)

When you contact us

  • Your name, email address, and the content of your message

3. How we use your data

To fulfil your order (contract performance)

We use your purchase details to process payment, send the gift to the recipient, deliver weekly story prompts by email, compile the final book, and manage printing and dispatch. This is necessary to perform our contract with you; you cannot opt out of this processing while remaining a customer.

To run the service (legitimate interests)

We store story answers to compile your book, manage scheduling, and provide customer support. We have a legitimate interest in maintaining accurate records and improving our service.

To send marketing communications (consent)

We will only send you marketing emails if you opt in. You can withdraw consent at any time by clicking “unsubscribe” in any email or by contacting us directly.

Analytics and advertising (consent)

With your cookie consent, we use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use our site and Meta Pixel / Google Ads to measure ad performance and reach relevant audiences. We never sell your data to any third party.

4. Third-party services

We share your data only with trusted partners who help us deliver the service. All processors are contractually bound to protect your data and act only on our instructions.

For services operating in the US, transfers are protected under Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent adequacy mechanisms.

5. How long we keep your data

  • Order and payment records: 7 years (UK tax law)
  • Story content / book data: For the life of your subscription, plus 12 months after cancellation so you can request a reprint
  • Email communications: 2 years
  • Analytics data: 26 months (Google Analytics default)
  • Contact enquiries: 2 years

After these periods, data is deleted or anonymised. You can request earlier deletion; see your rights below.

6. Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to:

  • Access: request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • Rectification: ask us to correct inaccurate data
  • Erasure: ask us to delete your data (“right to be forgotten”)
  • Restriction: ask us to limit how we use your data
  • Portability: receive your data in a machine-readable format
  • Objection: object to processing based on legitimate interests
  • Withdraw consent: at any time, where processing is based on consent
